Expanse, 1959

Rectangular canvas, nearly square but a bit wider. A roundish white shape on black background, the more you look at the shape the less it looks round and the more it is apparent that it is tilted off kilter and has obvious tweaks to it to give it more character. As with most of Leon's work the black background also takes on a life of it's own and can seem like the dominant shapes coming in from the left and right of the canvas.
